AI is revolutionizing industries across the globe, from healthcare to agriculture. It is increasingly used in robotics and edge devices to make processes faster, less prone to errors, and more cost-efficient. With lots of data to process, the brains of AI devices heat up quickly and require effective cooling solutions.

If you are using the NVIDIA Jetson family of modules for your AI-powered devices, you’ll be excited to know that we have added ATS (Advanced Thermal Solutions) to our list of manufacturers. Read on for an overview of their heatsinks!

What Are Heatsinks?

Heatsinks are heat dissipation devices that serve the purpose of supporting the functional and operational integrity of electronics. If electronics lack proper thermal management, they have a shorter lifespan and worse performance. An overheated chip faces a higher risk of breaking down, causing damage to the entire system.

Heatsinks consist of two key elements:

  • Base
  • Fins

Heatsinks remove and disperse heat from chips through conduction, convection, and radiation. To begin with, the heat arrives in the fins. From there, a fluid flow takes it away by either natural or forced convection. In the cases of forced convection, this just means that an additional fan is installed next to a heatsink.

Depending on the method of production, heatsinks can be categorized into the following types:

  • Extruded
  • Stamped
  • Bonded
  • Folded Fin
  • Single Fin Assembly
  • Swaged
  • Forged
  • Skived

When it comes to attaching heatsinks to components, heatsinks fall into one of the following types, depending on the method of attachment:

  • Thermal Tape
  • Epoxy
  • Wire Form
  • Clips
  • Threaded Stand-Offs and Compression Springs
  • Push-Pins

The performance of heatsinks can be improved through anodization, the electrochemical process that enhances radiation heat transfer.

ATS Heatsinks for the NVIDIA Jetson Family

Whether you are using a module from Jetson AGX Orin or the Jetson Xavier series, we have a heatsink in store for you. All of the heatsinks come with leaf springs and screws for secure PCB mounting. Note that some heatsinks, such as ATS-NVP-3275-C3-R0, require purchasing fans.

When choosing a heatsink to suit your needs, you can filter them by dimensions and thermal resistance. If you need help, don’t hesitate to reach out to us for a consultation! We’re happy to answer any questions you may have.

RoHS or REACH Compliance

When shopping for a heatsink for your Jetson module, you will have peace of mind knowing that all ATS’s heatsinks are RoHS or REACH-compliant. If you haven’t heard of these abbreviations before, don’t worry! We’ll explain with a little summary for each:

  • The EU’s RoHS regulation stands for Restriction of Hazardous Substances and prohibits the use of lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers in manufacturing.
  • REACH regulation means the registration, evaluation, authorization, and restriction of chemicals. It controls all chemicals used to manufacture a product, making sure manufacturers do not use any carcinogens, persistent, bio-accumulative, and toxic substances, as well as very persistent and very bio-accumulative substances
